GIS & Mapping

What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based system for storing, analyzing, and managing data that is spatially referenced to the earth. It is a tool that allows users to organize and display data as a visual representation - usually in the form of a map. GIS has been used in a diverse range of fields from resource management, the real estate industry, oil/gas, criminology, emergency planning, or from planning and development of urban and rural areas to environmental impact assessments.

The County of Stettler's GIS Department is responsible for the collection, maintenance, and distribution of the county's geographic data. We offer a number of GIS related services to county staff, ratepayers, government organizations, and private business.

How does the County use GIS?

GIS offers opportunities for staff to better produce maps, aerial photography, GPS use in County vehicles and equipment, and importantly as a tool of the Planning & Development process.

Rural Addressing

The County of Stettler has a “Blue Sign” rural addressing system, based on provincial guidelines, with the purpose of better defining where access is gained for a residence. This is largely beneficial over the traditional legal land location.

For more information, or to get a Blue Sign on your rural property, contact County Administration.
